adjustable wrench The size of the opening can be changed by rotating a threaded adjuster with your thumb. Allows for versatility and accuracy. acrylic Synthetic resin widely used as a latex to produce paints with good color and color retention. Acrylic latex paints may be thinned and cleaned up with water. auger 1. Flexible metal cable fished into drain lines and traps to dislodge obstructions. 2. Carpenter's tool for boring holes in wood. aerator Round screened screw-on tip of a sink spout. It mixes water and air for a smooth flow. air duct Pipes that carry warm air and cold air to rooms and back to a furnace or air conditioning system. air lock Bubble of air which restricts the flow of water in a pipe. alkyd Synthetic resin widely used in the manufacture of paints and varnishes. Alkyd paint must be thinned and cleaned up with solvent or paint thinner. The terms alkyd paint and oil-based paint are generally used interchangeably. allen wrench Same as a hex key. ampere The rate of flow of electricity through electric wires (a.k.a. amp). apron 1. Paved area, such as the juncture of a driveway with the street or with a garage entrance. 2. Frame around the base of a table to which the top and legs are fastened. arbor Shelter of latticework or branches covered with climbing shrubs or vines. astragal Moulding attached to one of a pair of swinging double doors, against which the other door strikes. awl Sharp-pointed tool used to make starter holes for screws or to scribe lines.
